Retriever Field Training



Retrieving class is open for retrievers of all breeds.


Beginning retrieving class will include an introduction to retrieving on both land and water, line manners, teaching marking, delivery to hand, exposure to various kinds of duck and goose decoys, distractions, limited exposure to gunfire and will include retrieving bumpers, ducks and exposure to live ducks.


Intermediate retrieving class is intended for retrievers that are already doing limited retrieving and will include improving marking ability, enhancing line manners and steadiness, extending retrieving distances on both land and water, exposure to more complex retrieves, multiple retrieves, exposure to various kinds of decoys, distractions and gunfire. Retrieving bumpers and bothlive and dead ducks will be used. If live ducks are shot, there may be a small addition charge per duck. Dogs entered in the Intermediate class should already be making simple retrieves. By the end of the program, successful dogs should be able to be successful in AKC Junior Hunter tests, UKC/HRC Started tests, Working Certificate tests and in actual hunting situations.


Retrieving class will be taught by Sunnyside’s Don Smith, with assistance by Karen Smith. Don has finished 56 retriever field titles, including multiple Master Hunters and Hunting Retriever Champions. Karen has put multiple Working Certificate and Working Certificate Excellent and Junior Hunter titles on her golden retrievers over the years.


Class fee for each session of 7 week classes is $100.

Because of the amount of individual attention given to each dog, class sizes are limited.
